Large-amplitude internal solitary waves in a two-fluid model

چکیده
We compute solitary wave solutions of a Hamiltonian model for large-amplitude long internal waves in a two-layer stratification. Computations are performed for values of the density and depth ratios close to oceanic conditions, and comparisons are made with solutions of both weakly and fully nonlinear models. It is shown that characteristic features of highly nonlinear solitary waves such as broadening are reproduced well by the present model. To cite this article: Ph. Guyenne, C. Large amplitude dust ion acoustic solitons: considering dust polarity and nonextensive electrons
The characteristics of arbitrary amplitude dust ion acoustic solitary waves (DIASWs) are studied in unmagnetized dusty plasmas whose constituents are cold uid ions, nonextensive electrons and stationary negative/positive dust particles. The pseudopotential approach has been used to investigate the structure of localized waves. It is found that, solitary waves exist in a definite interval for th...
متن کاملOn Regularizing the Strongly Nonlinear Internal Wave Model
A strongly nonlinear asymptotic model describing the evolution of large amplitude internal waves in a two-layer system is studied numerically. While the steady model has been demonstrated to capture correctly the characteristics of large amplitude internal solitary waves, a local stability analysis shows that the time-dependent inviscid model suffers from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability due to...
متن کاملGeneration of internal solitary waves by frontally forced intrusions in geophysical flows
Internal solitary waves are hump-shaped, large-amplitude waves that are physically analogous to surface waves except that they propagate within the fluid, along density steps that typically characterize the layered vertical structure of lakes, oceans and the atmosphere. As do surface waves, internal solitary waves may overturn and break, and the process is thought to provide a globally signific...
متن کاملInteractions of large amplitude solitary waves in viscous fluid conduits
The free interface separating an exterior, viscous fluid from an intrusive conduit of buoyant, less viscous fluid is known to support strongly nonlinear solitary waves due to a balance between viscosity-induced dispersion and buoyancy-induced nonlinearity. The overtaking, pairwise interaction of weakly nonlinear solitary waves has been classified theoretically for the Korteweg–de Vries equation...
متن کاملNumerical study of interfacial solitary waves propagating under an elastic sheet
Steady solitary and generalized solitary waves of a two-fluid problem where the upper layer is under a flexible elastic sheet are considered as a model for internal waves under an ice-covered ocean. The fluid consists of two layers of constant densities, separated by an interface. The elastic sheet resists bending forces and is mathematically described by a fully nonlinear thin shell model. Ful...
